What Really Changed My Fitness Game

Fitness Tracking. This is an intimidating topic - are your workouts effective and challenging your body? It is important to have an accurate way to track the quality of your workouts through metrics such as calories burned, heart rate, and percentage heart rate.

One way to do this is through a heart rate monitor. While the workout feature on my Apple Watch is a great estimate of my heart rate and the amount of calories I burned, I found when wearing my heart rate monitor, the metrics were a little different. I was actually burning more.

I started using a MyZone heart rate monitor with the included app that I purchased from my gym, however there are many brands out there that will accomplish the same purpose. I quickly learned that I could shorten my workouts by upping the intensity. I saw a more complete and accurate picture of the calories I was burning with each workout and was able to use this information to structure my diet that day. But the most unexpected benefit of a heart rate monitor was the accountability. It actually encouraged me to not only workout but push those workouts a little harder, walk a little bit further, or even try to jog for just a few minutes. It doesn't help my competitiveness either that my dad has the same heart rate monitor - gives us a little friendly competition month to month!

If you are interested in seeing how many calories your morning walk burns or if you are getting your heart rate into the target zone for better cardiovascular health, start researching the option of a heart rate monitor. It is something that will change your workouts for the better!
