Fitness Feature - Walking

I have been wanting to share some of my favorite ways to get moving - both in and out of the gym. This season of uncertainty with all that is going on in the world has led me to appreciate the physical and mental benefits of a good, long walk.

I would go out on a limb and say that many of us, including myself, underestimated the power of a walk. I'm not just talking about the physical benefits - though those are there. I am speaking on the mental and emotional pluses. Let's dive into what has become my favorite, most mind-clearing activity during this quarantine season.

This is our yellow lab, Wyatt. These days he gets as excited about walks as I do!

Walking burns calories and can be a tool to use for weight loss. It is also great for improving your long term heart health. However, I have found it is also great for my mental health. I am the first to admit the added anxiety I have these days, but I have found that stepping outside and simply getting some fresh air can help me return home with a more positive attitude, a less anxious mind, and a new perspective on my circumstances.

Walking has also become a way to cultivate relationships. Most trails, city streets, or pedestrian paths are wide enough to maintain the social distancing procedure of staying 6 feet apart. I know we are all in need of a little human interaction these days, so if you feel comfortable, call a friend (who has been following quarantine, too) and get outside.

I hope I have convinced you to try taking a walk this week. Grab your best, supportive walking shoes, throw on your headphones, turn on your favorite podcast or Spotify station, and get moving today friends, even if just for a mile or two, your future self will thank you!
