Dry January

While not everyone will do dry January, I know it is a popular resolution each year. My roommate and I have decided to do Whole30 for the month of January which includes no alcohol. I wanted to do a little post about other options when plain water or unsweet tea is just not cutting it!

I have recently discovered flavored carbonated water. Some of my favorites are Spindrift, Waterloo, Good & Gather, and Bubly. I keep a pack or two on hand for a little mid-morning or mid-afternoon pick me up. They have just enough flavor to feel like I'm having something special but without the calories or sugar of a soda. It is fun to play around with the different flavors until you find the one that you like the best. I personally love the Lemon Spindrift. They even have a flavor that is a play on an Arnold Palmer with half black tea and half lemon. It is truly so yum and refreshing! These are usually 0-10 calories depending on the flavor, therefore they are guilt-free! This may be a great tool for you if part of your resolution was kicking the everyday soda or sugar-y beverages goodbye!

In terms of an alternative for alcohol, Walmart, Target and Trader Joe's sell sparkling waters in larger bottles - not cans. My mom has been known to poor herself a glass of sparkling water in a wine glass at the dinner table or have a Topo Chico brand water with a lime in it, while my dad is having a beer. I have also included a link to a list of 20 mocktails to try! They look easy and delicious.

I wanted to mention that we are not saying drinking alcohol is bad or against a lifestyle of wellness. We just wanted to bring up some alternatives to throw into the mix. Alcohol does come with calories and sugar. For some people, it causes bad reactions, upset stomachs, or the next day slump. Limiting alcohol intake is just another tool for individuals who want to lower their caloric intake, make better choices about what goes into their bodies, or just have a month "reset" to see how they feel. My mom and I are the first to admit loving a glass of Cab with dinner or a glass of Prosecco on a hot summer night. We are not saying those things are off limits. We just want to make everyone aware that alcoholic drinks are a source of calories just like your favorite dessert, chip, or other treat - again not to say that they are off limits! Moderation in all things.
