Today we are talking about a simple way to help manage stress. One of those big rocks in life.

Paying attention to your breathing is one of the most basic forms of meditation. If you are concentrating on breathing only, you are in the moment and relaxed (remember we are trying to get to that parasympathetic system). It is a way you can stop, calm down and stop stressing.

The simplest technique is to simply observe it, do nothing other than follow the breath cycle. Do not try and control it, just observe it.

  1. Sit in a comfortable chair and position.

  2. Focus on your breathing. Notice the cycle of inhalation and exhalation. Your job is just to notice and observe, not change anything.

If you do this for five minutes per day, it is the most basic form of meditation and relaxation method (See the flight and fight post earlier in the blog). I have even done this in the middle of the day when I think, "What else can go wrong???" I sit there for five minutes, breathe, say a prayer and then I am good to go.

This is a way that YOU can stop where you are, calm down and just relax. Simply!!!

All material gathered and researched through my amazing fellowship program, The Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.
